WAKE UP INDIA!

Keeping ourselves in tune with the new age fad of minting easy to coin catchphrases, we the humble female beauticians, living in different metro cities of India, have solemnly  resolved to popularise our new ‘mantra’ called ‘WAKE UP’.

If you find it rhyming with ‘Start up, be smart and Stand up’ India; then it is indeed a concrete evidence of your being alive in circa 2016. If you think carefully, the act of WAKING UP precedes the act of standing up or starting up!

Smart isn’t it? Especially if it comes from a bunch of hardworking, ‘stylist at home’ – service providers, engaged in the humble profession of removing excess hair follicles and dead skin cells from human body, including the feet.

Nationalist, rationalist, communist, spiritualist, numerologist, dentist, capitalist, fascist, geologist, microbiologist, (list is endless) – whatever their profession; all the Indians from Chennai to Chandigarh and Kolkata to Ahmedabad can enlist! And we are pretty sure that no one will have qualms about screaming out our brand new ‘mantra’ to prove that they are awake.

The usual suspects, like the stand-up humourists, cartoonists, astrologists, and screaming TV journalists are however humbly advised to stay away from our ‘mantra’ as we are afraid that they might steal our thunder in the name of what the nation needs to know!

Moreover, if they don’t understand our true intention to mentally wake up many of our sisters living in urban India; they might naively label us with their favourite nickname of the season. Yes you guessed it right – anti-national and anti-progressive forces!

It is also important to clarify here that we are a ‘BY WOMEN & FOR WOMEN’ organisation that serves all living ‘matas’ and the potential mothers from the human race, especially if they are living or visiting the land of Hindustan (aka BHARAT, HIND and INDIA) irrespective of their caste, creed, religious belief and nationality.

Why then the urgent need to wake up?

In the space below we have shared a couple of instant eye-openers. They have been carefully cherry picked to enlighten you on the need to be woken up besides giving you a blissful understanding of our occupational hazards.

Incidence No. 1)

A lady with crisp convent educated English accent, called us from Whitefield Bangalore. We have no objections if some of you prefer to call it Bengaluru. She claimed that she has recently shifted from Mumbai along with her engineer husband and was in urgent need of ‘Home Salon Service’ as she wasn’t familiar with her neighbourhood parlours as yet. Her only request was that she wanted a ‘CHINESE’ female beautician! It was a shock for our call centre employee and her supervisor. Supervisor being an avid follower of social and electronic media, totally believed in the ‘achhey din’ story but wasn’t too sure, if such good times had indeed arrived, wherein Chinese professional therapists (females) had started providing doorstep parlour services in India.

Our potential customer then went on to describe how these allegedly Chinese women are frequently spotted in her new neighbourhood and to her utter surprise a few of them were even heard speaking in Hindi!

Our smart supervisor was immediately awakened. Her inner eyes had opened. She regained her composure and in her usual humble demeanour she queried, whether the lady meant north eastern girls – hailing from one of the seven sister states and new born brotherly state of North East India?

Our respected potential patron emphatically repeated – YES the CHINKY females please!!! They are extremely polite and ohhh…soooo…. soft spoken.

We had to politely express our inability to send Chinese girls at her place or for that matter any Indian homes without them having an Indian visa.

We the less educated women of India also believe that such terminologies are derogatory. Do you? Are you awake to such crass ignorant racism around you? If no, then it’s time to say it aloud and say it together – WAKE-UP INDIA!

If you have also witnessed such an exhibition of smartness, from your fellow Indian sisters, then let’s get together to distribute a few maps of India. We can then shout – BHARAT KE MATAO KI BHI JAI alongside hail motherland.

Incidence No.2)

Another well-heeled potential patron called us at her foreign sounding posh apartment in * Gurgaon. *(If you are into past life regression these days, then please call it by its new name – The ‘CYBERCITY cum MILLENNIUM CITY of GURUGRAM’).

 She needed an expensive paraben free imported facial done on her immediately. We suggested an Italian brand. She agreed.

The therapist reached on time and was politely made to wait near the entrance of her expensive abode. To our collective rude shock, the hubby dear of our patron began screaming at our call centre co-ordinator, saying… ‘My wife is extremely fair, pinkish and delicate. And how dare you send a dusky complexioned aesthetician at my doorstep for the parlour services? How can I allow her to touch my wife’s face’ Why do you keep such women on your payroll!

This charming little display of prejudice against a particular skin tone may unnerve the weak, but not us.

We at ‘HOME SALON SERVICE’ are extremely proud of the fact that we do not discriminate on the basis of complexion at all. But if you do, then it’s time to collectively WAKE UP from this British or colonial hangover. Some historians may add Aryan, Hun and Greek, Afghan or Mughal influence too.

Jai Hind sisters, we believe we live in a free and democratic country called India. Hence we are planning to request the authorities to create more sensitive and sensible cities instead of smart cities and insensitive citizens.

Incidence No. 3)

A jet setting social worker having an Indian passport and working on several women empowerment related issues in the developing world; called us during the lunch break at one of the women centric international conference in Kuala Lumpur and requested us for a doorstep beauty service in her hotel room in Hyderabad; a brief stopover on her way back home in Pune.

Our telephone operator expressed our constraints as an on-demand beauty service provider and our inability to serve customers in a hotel room, unless they are traveling alone as a women. They also have to share with us the hotels management’s consent.

Undeterred by our polite refusal she pressed us to confirm the appointment as she was pregnant. She also procured the necessary permission from the hotel’s duty manager.

Being an emotional and yet practical Indian enterprise, we gave in to her repeated appeals and sent our senior most therapists Ms. Lata – a mother of two grown up children. An expert in providing a gentle and caring massage to expecting and lactating mothers.

Our dear patron sent Lata back from the hotel room saying ‘Lata’ was too old.

We did not know at age 40 a woman was old for another woman for providing beauty services like ammonia free hair colour (root touch-up) and a fresh fruit clean-up.

Bharat Mata must be a grand old lady then. What do we do with her? Send her to an old age home?

WAKE UP INDIA – before we learn to stand or start up.

JAI HIND.

WHITE HOUSE WILL TURN PINK ON TUESDAY 8th NOVEMBER, 2016

As a woman who works and writes the blogs for ‘Home Salon Service’ – an organisation that is exclusively ‘BY & FOR’ the women of India, I can personally stick my neck out and say it with utmost confidence that the American Presidential contest of 2016 will be between two woman candidates and in all likelihood Ms. Hillary Rodham Clinton will move into the white house as the first ever woman President of this super power named United States of America.

I can say it with – ‘take it in writing’ kind of confidence; even though I am neither a frequent visitor to US nor a resident of USA. It is the same for my relatives, friends and family.  Individually and collectively we have no expertise in any of these domains called psephology, political science or International relations.

I am sure, many of you might be wondering;

  1. Why am I talking about American politics in a beauty related article?
  2. What on earth gives me this confidence to make such a bold declaration? Is it just woman to woman bonding across the Atlantic or Pacific oceans?

Allow me to answer the first query, first;

Answer: a) I feel the ladies who are our clients, living in the metro cities of India and most of my blog readers (includes men) are matured, well-educated, rational and intelligent human beings. They are discerning individuals can hold forth on many subjects besides discussing the benefits of seaweed and fresh fruit facials.

They are possibly sick and tired of external beauty related tips – ‘WHAT to do and WHAT not to do’. Especially, all those articles which vaingloriously announces that the ‘WINTER IS HERE!  As if the reader cannot feel it!  Or under-estimates our collective intelligence by using dumb and vague adjectives like ‘AWESOME, MIND BLOWING, COOL’ to describe their products and services. I have nothing against these words or their users; but in my humble opinion it should not come from a SELLER of services. We ought to be treated better, isn’t it?

So why cannot a contest between two beautiful ladies for the top-most job in the world find space in a beauty related blog?

Answer: b) My confidence, in Hillary’s victory, stems from the fact that I am from the beauty industry. America is on a beautiful course correction path. After denying blacks the right to vote, or the dignity of an equal citizen for centuries, the great citizens of that great country opted for an African immigrant’s child as their President in the last 10 years. It is now time that the typical Anglo-Saxon, Christian and White Male only bastion is breached by an erudite woman like Hillary. After all the biggest support base of Mr. Obama in the last two elections were the beautiful women of America.

Ranged against Hillary are atavistic, ugly and creepy voices of misogynist religious conservative old men that are against anything that is natural or beautiful. Their fight is against women and their bodies. They are against – ‘Right to abortion, right to teach our children the right knowledge, right for free universal medicine’ and the list is long.

As a person from the beauty industry, my instinct tells me what is ugly and I sincerely stand against all kinds of ugly thoughts that give rise to such voices. And I am sure my sisters and friends in America feel the same.  Together we say

‘WE STAND FOR BEAUTY & ALL THINGS BEAUTIFUL – BOTH EXTERNAL & INTERNAL’.

Now, whether upon Hillary becoming the next President, will mean less domestic violence, abuse and gunshot wounds for the women of America, is another aspect or story that’s hidden in the womb of time.

Till then Happy Makar Sankrant, Poush Sankranti and Pongal

Cheers

GO VEGGIE – IN 2016

Hey Friends,

As an ongoing endeavour of team ‘Home Salon Service’, we strive to deliver thought provoking information which will hopefully help you make the right choice, when it comes to your health and well-being. That’s the NEW YOU in the NEW YEAR!

Please also do not get me wrong after reading the headline. I am not promoting vegetarianism and I have certainly not turned vegan all of a sudden.

It’s just that on the first day of this New Year, I have made a few personal resolutions. One of them, which I am sharing through this article, is to avoid the following;

  • Mineral Oil
  • White Oil
  • Aromatic Oils having Mineral or White Oil as their base oil.

To help explain, why I am so keen to share my personal resolution in public, you will have to allow me to take a step back and ask you a couple of direct questions.

  • Do you usually read the – Ingredients / Content column – that’s usually mentioned in very small font type on the reverse of a tube, bottle or container of your favourite ‘SHAMPOO, CONDITIONER, MOISTURISER, LOTION, CREAM and BALM?
  • If yes, then did you ever come across the words ‘MINERAL’ or ‘WHITE’ oil? And did you realise it is routinely used in many creams, balms, lotions and moisturisers that we regularly use; after seeing / reading their oh..so..soft, so caring, so cute and positive sounding public messages about them?
  • Did you try to find out – What on earth is mineral or white oil?
  • And why do I want to avoid it? (I do not expect you to know the answer to this but if you care to read through, you will know WHY. And you too can make an informed choice in future.

Primary Reason Being – The name Mineral or White oil is imprecise and wrong.

An exotic and great sounding name like ‘MINERAL OIL or WHITE OIL’ is used as part of a very clever marketing strategy to sell dirt cheap liquid by product (distillate) produced during petroleum refining!  The crude petroleum oil refining and marketing companies tell us the truth that they are using MINERAL / WHITE oil in our cosmetic and skin care products but it is our laziness and blind faith in their advertising messages, which stops us from finding out the truth about what are we actually using.

For generating an even higher profit, they add some colouring agent, aromatic essence, perfumes (again some chemicals produced in factories) and sell it to us as some magical and great nourishment oil for our skin, including that of our babies.

Well, it may be, for those mothers and places in the world with no plants, trees and availability of only animal fats like tallow or lard. But a traditionally, geographically, agriculturally and culturally rich and diverse country like India or large parts of the tropical countries like Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and the vast majority of its citizens would any day prefer rubbing vegetable oils like coconut, mustard, palm, olive, almond etc. or other veg oil based creams and moisturisers on our cheeks and skin against these misleading names like Mineral, White and Aromatic Oil.

Wouldn’t you do the same?  – If given a choice of rubbing PETROLEUM on one cheek and COCONUT Oil on the other. The answer is obvious.

But, if the oil marketing company and the cosmetic company cleverly says the choice is between MINERAL OIL OR WHITE OIL on ONE cheek and COCONUT OIL on the other?  I bet many who are unaware of this reality will be confused and might end up using the perfumed MINERAL OIL or AROMATIC WHITE oil (a cheap by-product of crude petroleum)!

Stay away from these clever euphemisms, as much as possible, even if you can afford to buy the most expensive cream in this world, which ironically is using the cheapest mineral / white oil as its key ingredient.

Stick to the traditional knowledge of your grand mom – guilt and stress free. And stay healthy.

Cheers

Which is the best oil for all skin types?

Hi again friends!

I am sure those of us living in the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent, especially those who enjoy flaunting our woollens and those of us who like being cosy inside our duck feather comforters or the heavy duty Korean blankets; are upset about the late arrival of winter this year. Weather bureau blames it on EL-NINO. Personally, I don’t care, whether; it’s EL-NINO or LA-NINA effect. All I can say that the winter is not at its best in 2016.

Best is a superlative and subjective term. We know that. But can it be applied to winter or the subject of my blog today? For e.g. Can we say which is the best oil, for massaging my cute new born bundle of joy or for cooking a spicy Indian curry. We will not discuss cooking here, as this is a beauty and well-being related section.

Ok, so let’s rephrase this question. Is there – the best, very good, most apt or the perfect oil for massaging different skin types? Or, the best oil for replenishing the lost skin moisture, in this timid or not so timid winter?

Based on my several different interactions with medical doctors, oil technologists, PhD holding nutritionists, dermatologists from Malaysia, Germany, Australia, India, Egypt and China, personally I have come to this firm and scientific conclusion that there is NO ‘ONE’ or ‘THE BEST’ oil for any skin type or occasion! And as a person with scientific, rational or logical bent of mind, I will not be intolerant against any new academic research or unbiased finding that you may forward, to contradict my claims. (And hopefully you will not be representing the vested interest of the marketing and promotion or paid research department of a particular type of oil selling company)

The various vegetable oils, creams or fats (including dairy fat) traditionally preferred in different parts of India for various topical (external) application is usually based on historical knowledge; that has been handed over to us by our ancestors over many centuries. In other words, an individual’s preference for a particular oil /fat was and to large extent is; determined by various geographical and agro-climatic factors they lived in. To put it simply, whatever plant / tree / crop grows in that soil type, clime resulting in easier access, availability and affordability, got preference over other oils and fats. Hence we find that in India, coconut oil is the most preferred one in tropical Kerala, whereas mustard in the Gangetic plains of Bihar, West Bengal and UP. Most of the dairy fats like ghee and clarified butter in consumed / preferred in states with higher bovine population (pun intended) and milk production; like Haryana, Punjab etc.

The same logic applies for people inhabiting different countries, regions etc. of our planet. For e.g.; in a tropical country like Philippines, with year round availability of coconut, they would have used coconut oil and coconut oil based creams for generations. Today, a country that grows maximum amount of soya (USA / Brazil), sunflower (Russia / France) or olive (Italy / Greece) or cocoa (Columbia) will give priority to oils and fats derived from those sources as it’s easily available at a lower cost.

So, from now on, do not lose your sleep over which brand and type of oil to apply on your beautiful skin. Be guilt and stress free when you opt for one brand / type of oil over the other for you or your near and dear one. Oils and fats in their external application, are supposed to lend softness to our skin by moisturising them. An oil should make your skin feel supple, lend lustre, look refreshed and recharged. That’s why we at ‘Home Salon Service’ India believe that it is the quality and experience of our therapists that makes the ultimate difference and not just the oil.

Even the most advertised baby oil of a famous multi-national company was recently found to have no extra special qualities like higher quantity of Vitamin E or any other magical nutrients that make them charge a premium over other vegetable oils. Hence any of 18-19 vegetable oils, available on this planet earth; be it sesame, almond, apricot, mustard, coconut or olive is as good as the other.

Moreover, the much advertised rare and exotic Vitamins that the branded expensive baby oils claim to possess are either entirely or near totally destroyed during the solvent extraction, heating generated in refining and packaging process! All refined oils have no special qualities in them. If they have any, it is for a limited shelf life period and created with the help of extra supplements mixed in it during the packing process!

Make merry, pass on this information to many in your friends and family.

Eating water is better than drinking it!

Hi Friends!

At a glance, the headline of our first blogpost for the ‘NEW YEAR & NEW YOU’ campaign, would possibly appear, to many of you, to have been written by a Bengali to justify, why they usually use the word ‘Khao / Khabo’ (meaning to eat / eating) instead of drink / drinking any drinkable stuff in liquid form.

To many others, it may sound like a riddle or a ridiculous comment, isn’t it? Yes, it did sound like one to me, when I first heard it 5 years back, on my way to ‘Pindari’ Glacier, after completing the arduous uphill trek till ‘Dhakuri’ pass from ‘Bageshwar’, in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. I was exhausted with fatigue and thirst. The nearest KMVN (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) rest house was at least 10 minutes’ walk away and I had run out of drinking water, I had carried in my rucksack.

This wise old shepherd woman from ‘Garhwal’ who had lived all her life in the higher reaches of awe inspiring, mesmerising and majestic Himalayas, muttered this statement while extending her hand to comfort me. I liked the concern in her voice but could not decode her statement; until she offered me freshly peeled orange slices to suck!

It’s only then, at approximately 9,000 feet above the sea level, I suddenly realised this profound truth, that we actually do eat water, when we eat fresh succulent fruits like oranges, watermelon, strawberry etc. Water that enters our body while eating it permeates our cells better than when we gulp or drink water.

So, to rediscover the NEW YOU, do remember to consume a lot of fibrous fresh fruits this winter to replenish the 70% water content in your system. I am sure this will compensate for the reduced intake of water in this cold and dry weather.

Alternately you may also call for my professional therapist friends from Home Salon Service’ if you live in a metro city of India, for making your skin eat water with the help of our moisturising wine or fresh fruit facials. That’s another way of eating a liquid, but not as effective as the earlier one.

I will be happy to see a quiet thank you smile on your lips for bringing that extra glow on your face and for helping you crack this profound philosophical and nutritional statement, learnt from the ‘Himalayan Heights’.

Cheers

DING DONG BELL – FROM ‘DONG’

Hi! Friends,

As per British English, the word ‘Ding Dong’ means an argument or a hard fought contest. Centuries back their English speaking ancestors used this word to communicate a riotous party. Today it usually denotes the sound of a bell. It could be a temple, church or our humble door bell.

Linguists say that the origin of human language has some mystic connection with the universal resonance or harmony that exists amidst many apparently unconnected things in nature. I am not sure how one can investigate that as part of their DING – DONG theory and many more academic theories such as – Ta-Ta, La-La, Pooh-Pooh theory etc.

It’s not making any sense right? Well, since we at ‪#‎HomeSalonService’, respect anything that’s naturally / intrinsically beautiful in nature, this blog is about – ‘DONG’ – a picturesque, remote valley that’s located on a narrow stretch of land, flanked by Myanmar (Earlier known as Burma) and China on either side.

Why talk about it today? Because, in less than 10 hours from now – THE FIRST RAYS OF THE RISING SUN ON THE FIRST DAY of 2016, to HIT MAINLAND INDIA, like for many years in the past, will be ‘DONG’, Arunachal Pradesh.

Let that light from ‘Dong’ illumine your inner being with lot of positivity and encourage you to make this year of 2016, as YOURS!

Do have fun loads of fun tonight; party hard with your near and dear ones to usher in the New Year. But as a woman do remember these wise words of caution;

  1. a) If your sixth sense says that the party is going – ‘DING DONG’ then please leave that place immediately.
    b) If your partner is dead drunk, don’t let him get behind the wheels. Have ‘DING-DONG’ argument right there, take away the keys and call a radio taxi.
    c) If you go to a church or temple, then ring the ding dong bell.

Amen – Aamin – Om Shanti Om.

(01st January – 31st March,2016)

Ancient Indian wisdom says – ‘Cleanliness is next to godliness.

Especially in our towns and cities, near the posh housing colonies;
While we are at our suave best inside the house and at the parties!

Government of India is now levying a ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ cess;
But it will not make a difference, if we make it Government’s business!
The onus is on each one of us and as women; we pledge to take charge;
As we are against all things ugly, we will not neither spread filth nor tolerate!

#HomeSalonService is happy to launch this humble call to action!
Together let us co-create an aesthetic image of a modern nation.
Will reward the top 3 contributors of our PLAN – ‘Cleaner, neater neighbourhood’
Share & like this message and suggest your innovative ideas, as if this is your livelihood.

We are waiting to hear your implementable ideas or the ‘Cleanliness Actions’ initiated across India.
